Chesterfield 30 Year Flood Memories – Presentation October 21, 2023
Thirty years ago on July 30, the Tetra Plastics company located on Spirit of St. Louis Boulevard was informed by the Army Corp of Engineers of the impending levee breach in the Chesterfield Valley. They had been told that their three-foot sandbagging would hold off any flooding. The employees worked all day to sandbag, remove critical documents and install high volume pumps to pump out any water. Paul Mitchell, the company president and 12 other employees stayed in the building to man pumps that night to hold off any flooding but there was no end to the water.
The Chesterfield Heritage Museum invites you to come to see how all were rescued by helicopter the next day from the roof of the plant. This group and other Chesterfield Valley residents or workers will show videos and tell their stories at the Chesterfield Heritage Museum on the second floor of the Chesterfield Mall near Macys on Saturday, October 21 at 1PM.
This is a free event. The Museum also invites you to bring any 30 year- flood pictures to share with the group. Enjoy the Museum’s Flood and Missouri River displays while you are here.
